The Stabat Mater, one of the most powerful texts in the Latin liturgical tradition, is dedicated to Mary’s suffering beneath the cross, combining pain, compassion and a quiet, almost meditative peace. Joseph Haydn sets it to music in a surprisingly personal way, interweaving gentle lyricism, pure polyphony and moments of operatic drama. With simple motifs, he creates powerful emotions, depicting transitions between pain and reconciliatory light. He reveals human fragility with extraordinary sensitivity, and above all he brings consolation.
