Questions about life and death, as well as guilt and redemption, have been with us throughout history, and texts on these subjects have inspired many composers. More modern compositional approaches help to present this content in a slightly more subtle way, which, intertwined with the mysticism of Northeastern Europe, is clearly reflected in the works of Alfred Schnittke and Arvo Pärt.
