As an opera composer, Gioacchino Rossini experienced numerous successes and a great deal of splendour in his eventful life. He eventually devoted himself to creating culinary masterpieces, but he never gave up composing. For a small circle of friends, he created a series of chamber works, which he called péchés de vieillesse (sins of old age).
Petite messe solennelle was created in 1863, some 34 years after the creation of Rossini’s last opera. Although the Mass is made up of several extensive movements, the composer used the adjective petite (small) in the title with a hint of irony. He added the following inscription to the back of the manuscript, “Dear Lord, here it is finished, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music, or rather, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa, as you well know. Not much technique, a little bit of heart, that’s all. Blessings to you and grant me Paradise.”
