Until 1926, it was believed that most of Vivaldi’s compositions had been lost. The revival of his music, which we are still experiencing today, was only made possible by the spectacular discovery of approximately four hundred manuscripts in an archive near Turin. Since then, hardly a year has passed without the discovery of new and previously unknown masterpieces. The programme for the first concert of this year’s Philharmonic Festival of Baroque Music was designed by conductor Federico Maria Sardelli, who is considered one of the leading experts on Vivaldi’s music. He has edited and recorded a whole series of his works, written numerous studies, published a historical novel, and reconstructed the two concertos with obbligato organ that are featured on the present programme.
