Unrest
Programme
Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra
Federico Maria Sardelli, conductor
The orchestral works on the programme of the second concert of the Philharmonic Festival of Baroque Music were created in the period between 1743 and 1791, when simplicity and a cantabile style were valued above all in music, while at the same time composers were seeking previously unimagined contrasts. The programme ranges from an early sinfonia by the Prussian King Frederick II, to Haydn’s “London” symphony that was dubbed the “Miracle” after a performance at which listeners miraculously avoided a chandelier falling from the ceiling. The other composers are less well known today: Fils worked as a cellist at the Mannheim Court, Kraus led the Royal Chapel in Stockholm, and Rigel established himself as one of the most prominent Parisian musicians.
