At Catholic services held on Maundy Thursday, church organs and bells fall silent as a mark of sorrow in memory of Christ’s suffering. This year, the three days of silence that commence on this day coincide with two days of philharmonic concerts. Arvo Pärt’s mystical meditative music, which often verges on silence, Ravel’s restrained and muted waltzes, and Poulenc’s melodious depiction of the sorrowful Mother standing by the cross are intended to encourage reflection on suffering and salvation.
