German composer Norbert Burgmüller was born in Düsseldorf in the same year as Robert Schumann, but died tragically at the age of twenty-six. Schumann held Burgmüller’s creative work in high regard and considered him one of the most original composers of his time. It is clear that Schumann consciously adopted aesthetic elements from Burgmüller in his later creative period, which is when his Piano Concerto was created. Thus, together with his friend Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Schumann ensured that Burgmüller’s music did not sink into oblivion.
