The second movement of Piano Concerto No. 21 is one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most popular works today. Due to their saturation with the compositional outlooks of their own time, or perhaps from a latent sense of political rebellion, some composers of the twentieth century also flirted with Mozart’s period of music history. Among them was the young Prokofiev, who, at the age of just twenty-six, conceived his first symphony and christened it the “Classical”. In 1945, Shostakovich intended his Ninth Symphony, at least in principle, to celebrate the end of the Second World War.
