Brahms’ first attempt at writing a symphony ended with the creation of the First Piano Concerto, when the composer was just twenty-six years old. The European music audience then had to wait for almost twenty more years for the composer’s symphonic debut. Overshadowed by the authority of Beethoven’s music, Brahms responded to the repeated questions and encouragement with the words: “I will never write a symphony! You can’t imagine what it’s like to always hear such a giant walking behind you.” The way composers of our own time deal with the weight of the tradition will be revealed to us in a new work by Črt Sojar Voglar.
