Several parts of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio originate from earlier, completely distinct compositions, as if the best ideas only mature when they are finally placed in their true context. Similarly, the December performance of the Christmas Oratorio featuring renowned Slovenian soloists is growing into a tradition at the Slovenian Philharmonic. At the same time, each performance offers a new insight into Bach’s intimate festive creativity. On this occasion, our attention will turn to the first, second, fourth and sixth cantatas, works that Slovenian audiences have not had an opportunity to experience in concert for a long time.
